Experimental Therapeutics Program - Dr. Steven DuBois:
The Experimental Therapeutics Program in pediatric oncology at Dana-Farber conducts cutting-edge clinical trials of the newest anti-cancer therapies for children with advanced solid cancers, brain tumors, and leukemia. These clinical trials have a common goal of understanding the optimal dosing of these newer medicines in young people as well as understanding the effects of these medicines on pediatric cancers. As cancer therapies have evolved, more and more drugs being tested in pediatric oncology are targeted therapies directed against specific proteins thought to be important in cancer.
In parallel, Dr. DuBois and his team have developed advanced tools to study whether a specific drug is hitting its intended target in the patient. These tools are called pharmacodynamic tests and they are critically important in understanding how new drugs work. When initiating a clinical trial, Dr. DuBois often has funding to support the conduct of the clinical trial itself, but lacks funds to support these specialized pharmacodynamic tests.
Each of these tests costs about $10,000 to facilitate. Therefore, the funds raised through the Hyannisport Jimmy Fund Classic, roughly $100,000, will allow us to conduct approximately 10 specialized clinical trials being conducted in the Experimental Therapeutics Program. Thank you to all the sponsors and golfers for participating in this wonderful event.
